Self-care doesn't have to be big, time consuming, or expensive, but it needs to be prioritized. I admit that I neglected myself during the first couple of years of my babies' lives. Though after having three children, I've learned that prioritizing myself is the best thing I can do for those who depend on me.

Even after almost two years since giving birth, I'm still not in the mindset of focusing on fitness. It was really hard to accept my new body after each pregnancy so instead of doing something about it, I mentally crashed each time. Nevertheless, I gave myself grace because I now know that this is just a phase. Instead of focusing on fitness, I put focus on other forms of physical self-care that I can actually mentally handle.

Skincare

Oh how I miss my skin during pregnancy! I had zero acne while I was pregnant and it was glorious! I still had a skin care routine while pregnant, but I wasn't strict about it. When my body was going through postpartum, it was clear that I needed to up my skin care regimen. I spend about ten minutes daily with my skin care routine and it makes me feel so good!

Hair Care

This one was a big splurge for me the last year. I'll talk more about that on another post. I wanted to try something different and I had always admired balayage hair. Finally on my birthday, I turned my virgin asian black hair to ash gray blonde! I knew that it was going to damage my beautiful hair, but I didn't know how badly it was going to be damaged. I spent almost the whole year (and my money) trying different hair care products to search for the best ones and I enjoyed every single minute of it. I've locked down my favorites and now look forward to caring for my hair daily.

Nail Care

I like having pretty nails, but I can't justify spending $50 - $60 every two weeks to make them pretty. I also don't really have an extra hour to spare during nail salon hours to get them done anyway. One time though, I really needed to get my pedicure done (after winter months... iykyk), so I found a way by bringing work with me. So overall, it's not really a relaxing experience for me anyway so I don't bother. What I do now is buy nail wraps which takes me 10-15 minutes to do by myself during a work meeting and costs less than $15! Do what you gotta do!

Physical Therapy

Sitting in front of a computer all day long and gaining weight worsened my neck and back issues the last year. I signed up for virtual physical therapy through a program that my work provides and was amazed at the technology! My physical therapist preloads exercises that I have to do for the week based on my progress. I log into the app at my convenience, wear a device that tracks my motion, and then do the 20 minute exercise four times a week. With just a little bit of research on resources available to me, I was able to get myself on track to finding relief! This was the best thing I did for myself in terms of some form of physical activity.

There are so many ways to practice self-care and ultimately, it can be anything that makes YOU happy. The little things I did to my physical appearance daily and weekly added up to my overall emotional and mental well-being. However you interpret self-care, just start doing it. When you make something a priority, you will find time for it in your routine.
