I shared on my Instagram stories last week that I started seeing a Registered Dietician (RD).

Due to some health issues that came up within the last year, I've been seeing a specialty doctor every few months for bloodwork and checkups. During my last appointment, my provider recommended I speak to an RD so I can lose the weight I gained and maintain a healthier lifestyle to help manage my autoimmune disease.

I've done all the research about nutrition in the past and how I thought I should be eating, but nothing worked. I realized that maybe seeing a professional can offer several significant benefits for my health and well-being, so I took advantage of the referral. Based on my first meeting, here's what I learned about Registered Dieticians:

Personalized Nutrition Guidance

My RD provided tailored nutrition advice based on my health goals, dietary preferences, medical history, and lifestyle. She took into account my unique needs to create a nutrition plan that works for me. I told her some of the things I ate and she found me healthier alternatives on the spot!

Medical Condition Management

RDs are trained to develop a nutrition plan to manage and improve individual medical conditions. Because I was referred to an RD by my provider and they both conveniently work under the same health system, they work as a team to ensure my diet supports my overall health.

Meal Planning and Recipes

During the appointment, I was provided practical meal plans and recipe ideas that align with my dietary preferences that makes it easier for me to follow a nutritious diet. I was given a solid understanding of the nutrients my body needs, portion control, label reading, and how to make healthier food choices when eating out or cooking at home. We went over different ideas on what I can eat for each meal including snacks.

Long-Term Success

The appointment was a whole hour long and my RD focused on sustainable lifestyle changes which increases the likelihood of long-term success in developing healthy eating habits and reaching and maintaining my health goals.

I've never felt more empowered to take the steps towards a healthier lifestyle. The education I received from a professional has and will continue to help me stay motivated on this new journey towards better health!

If you're considering making significant changes to your diet or have specific health concerns, it is not a bad idea to consult with a registered dietitian to assist you in improving your overall health and well-being.
